If Machu Picchu is on your bucket list, don’t overlook the breathtaking Sacred Valley nestled between Cusco and the iconic Incan citadel. Known as the heart of the ancient Inca Empire, the Sacred Valley is a destination rich in culture, history, and natural beauty, and it’s also home to one of the most epic dining experiences in the world.
Enter: SkyLodge Adventure Suites: Peru’s famous transparent pods suspended 1,300 feet (400 meters) up the cliffside above the Sacred Valley. These futuristic capsules are not only an overnight stay for the brave, they’re also the site of one of the most unique meals you'll ever have.
As a travel advisor and adventure lover, I couldn’t resist adding SkyLodge to our Peru itinerary, even if we couldn’t snag an overnight booking. Thankfully, they offer an unforgettable SkyLodge Lunch Experience, complete with a four-course meal, champagne toast, and your choice of an adrenaline-pumping hike or climb to reach it.
A Sacred Valley Adventure for the Brave (and Hungry)
SkyLodge guests have two ways to reach the pods: a Via Ferrata climb or a guided hike with built-in safety harnesses. Since I have a slight (insert MAJOR) fear of heights, we chose the hiking route. (Spoiler: it’s still intense, with cliffside trails and a steel cable you’re clipped into for safety the entire way up.)
The final approach requires a short section of Via Ferrata, which means you’ll still get that thrilling “cliffhanger” moment before reaching your destination. Once we arrived, the view made every shaky step worth it: an expansive panorama of the Sacred Valley stretched below us, surrounded by the majestic Andes mountains.
Four-Course Lunch With a Side of Altitude
Once we were settled into our pod, our private chefs began preparing our gourmet lunch as we sipped champagne and took in the unreal views. The meal included:
A warm Andean soup
Fresh salad with local ingredients
A Peruvian main course (I went all in and tried cuy, or guinea pig, an iconic local delicacy!)
A sweet dessert to wrap things up
It was the definition of once-in-a-lifetime dining, especially when your meal is served 1,300 feet off the ground.
Ziplining Down the Mountain
After dessert, the adventure didn’t stop! We geared up and zipped down the mountain on a series of exhilarating ziplines. Some lines were long, some were steep, and a few even allowed tandem rides (yes, we screamed the whole way down). It was the perfect high-adrenaline finale to an unforgettable afternoon.
