Peru is a destination that surprises and delights at every turn. When we first chose it as our introduction to South America, we expected Machu Picchu to be the highlight, and it was. But what we didn’t expect was how vastly diverse, vibrant, and adventurous this country truly is. From the treetops of the Amazon Rainforest to the historic heart of Cusco to the wonder of the Sacred Valley, this 10-day itinerary is crafted for curious, active travelers looking to experience Peru’s natural wonders, ancient history, and bucket list adventures with a bit more comfort and ease.
As a travel advisor, I’ve fine-tuned this itinerary from our own unforgettable experience. Whether you’re ready to check Machu Picchu off your list or want to dive deep into Peru’s stunning scenery and culture, here’s how to make every moment count.
Day 1: Arrive in Lima & Fly to the Amazon Jungle
Your adventure begins in Peru’s capital, Lima. From here, take a domestic flight to Iquitos, where you’ll be whisked away to the Treehouse Lodge: a once-in-a-lifetime stay perched in the treetops of the Amazon Rainforest. This is the ultimate jungle immersion, complete with nature excursions, wildlife viewing, and falling asleep to the sounds of the jungle.
Day 2: Explore the Amazon
Spend the day exploring the Amazon’s lush ecosystem with guided tours by boat and on foot. You’ll spot sloths, monkeys, pink dolphins, and countless birds. Sunrise and sunset here are unforgettable. For travelers craving an off-the-grid experience filled with biodiversity, this part of Peru is magic.
Day 3–4: Return to Lima & City Sights
Fly back to Lima and explore this dynamic coastal capital. Don’t miss the clifftop views of Miraflores, the artsy charm of Barranco, or the culinary scene that puts Lima on the foodie map (hello, ceviche!). Take a walking tour through the historic center, sample pisco sours, and soak in the energy of the city.
Day 5: Fly to Cusco & Acclimate
Next stop: Cusco. At nearly 11,000 feet above sea level, take it easy your first day. Wander the charming cobblestone streets, drink coca tea, and explore Qorikancha temple ruins or simply relax in Plaza de Armas. Acclimatization is key here!
Day 6: Sacred Valley & SkyLodge Adventure
Drive into the Sacred Valley of the Incas and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime lunch at SkyLodge Adventure Suites, a cliffside pod suspended 1,300 feet above the valley floor. The hike and final via ferrata climb will get your heart racing, and the view (paired with a glass of champagne) makes it all worth it. Continue to Aguas Calientes for your Machu Picchu base.
Day 7: Machu Picchu Guided Tour
Take the early train to Machu Picchu for a fully guided tour of one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Whether you're hiking to the Sun Gate or simply marveling at the ruins and misty mountains, this is Peru’s crown jewel. A guided experience ensures you don’t miss the history or the best viewpoints.
Day 8–9: Return to Cusco & Explore More
Ride the Vistadome Observatory Train back to Cusco. It’s an unforgettable way to see the Andes in style. Spend the next two days diving deeper into Incan culture. Visit Sacsayhuamán, shop local artisan markets, or enjoy a cooking class to learn how to make lomo saltado. Cusco is bursting with color, culture, and surprises.
Day 10: Depart Peru
Fly back to Lima for your international departure. Take a final walk by the coast or sip a last pisco sour before heading home with incredible memories.
Add-On Adventures for an Extended Trip
Rainbow Mountain – A popular but physically demanding hike at over 17,000 feet. Stunning, but best reserved for experienced trekkers.
Maras Salt Mines & Moray – Add this on to your Sacred Valley day for unique photo ops and cultural insights.
Humantay Lake Hike – A moderate 5.5-mile round-trip hike to a dazzling alpine lake.
Colca Canyon – Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon and home to majestic Andean condors.
Nazca Lines or Ballestas Islands – For ancient wonders or coastal wildlife, head south from Lima.
Huacachina – A desert oasis perfect for sandboarding and dune buggy rides.
Inca Trail or Salkantay Trek – For adventurers wanting a multi-day trek to Machu Picchu.
Tips for Visiting Peru
Acclimate to Altitude – Especially in Cusco, take it easy and hydrate well.
Try Local Foods – Ceviche, lomo saltado, and (if you’re bold) cuy are must-tries.
Drink a Pisco Sour (or a few!) – But not in Cusco as you are acclimating to the altitude!
Brush Up on Spanish – It goes a long way and shows respect.
Pack Layers – Weather can vary wildly between regions and elevations.
Book in Advance – Machu Picchu and specialty experiences fill up fast.
