If you've followed our family's greatest adventure yet, you know all about our whirlwind six-month journey abroad in South Africa, and the joy of welcoming not one but two perfect daughters during that time.
One of the highlights? Hosting my amazing mother-in-law, Connie (aka Nana), for her first international trip. After months apart, there was nothing more magical than watching her finally hug her grandbabies for the very first time.
As a thank you for her endless love and support, we surprised Nana with an unforgettable experience: her very first African safari. As a travel agent specializing in family-friendly adventures and custom safari planning, I knew exactly how to make it extra special.
Why We Chose Pilanesberg National Park
While Kruger National Park is the most well-known reserve in South Africa, our postpartum reality called for something closer to Johannesburg and, importantly, malaria-free. We had previously celebrated Lowina's birthday at Pilanesberg National Park and loved every second, so returning for round two was an easy decision.
Pilanesberg offers incredible wildlife viewing without the need for anti-malarial medication, making it ideal for families with young children or expecting moms.
Where We Stayed: Bakubung Bush Lodge
Just two hours from Joburg and minutes from Sun City, Bakubung Bush Lodge is nestled right inside the park gates. The main restaurant overlooks a waterhole that attracts elephants, giraffes, and even the occasional rhino. Every mealtime felt like a private safari in itself!
We booked a 3-day half-board stay that included one group safari per day. On arrival, we just barely made our first game drive, but it was worth the rush. On Day 2, we enjoyed another group safari followed by a relaxing afternoon at the lodge spa, where even little Lowina got to enjoy her first-ever manicure and pedicure.
Our grand finale? A private game drive just for our family and close friends, and that’s where the magic really happened.
The Safari Highlight: Lions at Sunset
We had seen so much wildlife during our group drives: elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, wildebeest, and more. But there was one member of the Big Five we were still missing: the elusive lion.
On our private drive, we loaded up with anticipation. Nana and the girls rode in the back while we kept our eyes peeled in the front. After over an hour with no sightings, we pulled into an open field with no other trucks around. It didn’t seem promising...
Until it was.
Out in the distance: three lions who looked like siblings. At first they were silhouettes on the horizon, but slowly they began moving toward us. Playful, majestic, powerful. They passed within feet of our vehicle, close enough to hear the rustle of the grass under their paws.
It was surreal. Unforgettable. And the most emotional part? Watching Nana and our friends who turned into family abroad see their first lions in the wild, Nana with her granddaughters by her side.
