If you’re planning a trip to South Africa and looking to add something thrilling, unforgettable, and truly bucket-list-worthy, then shark cage diving in Gansbaai should be at the top of your list.
Known as one of the Great White Shark Capitals of the World, Gansbaai is a coastal fishing village just over two hours from Cape Town in the Western Cape. But it’s not just about the sharks, it’s the kind of adventure that mixes adrenaline, awe, and once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounters.
As a travel advisor, I can confidently say this is one of those rare experiences that families, couples, and adventure seekers remember forever. And we can help you plan it all.
A Second Shot at a Dream Dive
When my husband John and I first visited Cape Town in 2016, two big things were left unchecked on our list: the Table Mountain cable car and shark cage diving. Fast forward to 2022, and we returned with our daughter Lowina (and another baby girl on the way!), determined to turn missed opportunities into lifelong memories.
We succeeded in getting to the top of Table Mountain early in the week, and then it was time to head to Gansbaai with one main goal: cage dive with sharks, but this time with our toddler along for the ride!
Why We Chose Marine Dynamics
After lots of research, we booked our cage diving experience with Marine Dynamics, an award-winning ecotourism and conservation company based in Gansbaai. Their team of marine biologists and expert guides made us feel safe, informed, and excited from the start.
We had originally planned a two-day marine adventure of cage diving followed by their Marine Big 5 Tour, but unfortunately, day two was canceled due to weather (a good reminder to plan with flexibility).
Shark Cage Diving While Pregnant... With a Toddler in Tow
Our shark dive day started with a 5:30am weather check. Luckily, the winds calmed just enough, and we were cleared to dive. We met at the Great White House, Marine Dynamics' headquarters, for our orientation and continental breakfast before heading out.
This was Lowina’s very first boat ride, and I was 8 months pregnant with our second daughter. Let’s just say we were the most unexpected guests on the tour!
Once aboard, the swells were intense… 10 to 15 feet high! But, the views of the coastline and the open water were absolutely stunning. We anchored near Dyer Island, one of the most biologically rich marine ecosystems in South Africa.
Into the Cage: John's Shark Encounter
As soon as the crew dropped anchor, the sharks came to check us out. Within minutes, we spotted our first bronze whaler shark, and John was the first in line to suit up and hop into the cage.
Though we didn’t spot any great whites on this trip, John described the experience as one of the most invigorating moments of his life. The bronze whalers came so close that they bumped into the cage multiple times!
Thanks to low visibility from the storm the day before, you’d go from total blue to a shark in your face in seconds. Talk about a rush!
Meanwhile, Lowina and I snacked on the upper deck, where I could stay steady and still get a great view of the action. Ellie (in utero) was dancing the entire time, clearly enjoying the boat ride in her own way while making my experience not as pleasant.
Family-Friendly Shark Adventures? Yes, Actually.
While most people wouldn’t think of shark cage diving as a family experience, we found it to be surprisingly doable with a toddler. Lowina loved the boat, watching the birds soar alongside us, and napping on the ride back in the arms of the ocean’s rhythm.
Marine Dynamics was kind, helpful, and made us feel completely comfortable the entire time. And while I didn’t get into the cage, watching it all unfold from the boat was just as powerful.
Zebras at the Gate: Only in South Africa
After returning to shore and warming up with hot soup back at the Great White House, we headed back to our Airbnb in the Romansbaai Beach Estate and were greeted at the gate by a herd of zebras!
The staff told us it’s rare to see them all together like that, and it felt like the perfect full-circle moment. From sharks to zebras, ocean to savanna, South Africa showed off in full force.
