Johannesburg may be known as the economic engine of South Africa, but just beyond the city limits lies a whole world of incredible day trips waiting to be explored. Whether you're traveling with toddlers, grandparents, or multigenerational groups (like we often are!), Joburg is the perfect home base for unforgettable adventures.
From mini safaris to ancient caves, playful monkeys to panoramic views, there’s something for everyone within a short drive of Jozi. These are our family’s favorite day trips from Johannesburg, each one offering a chance to get out of the city and experience the wild beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality that South Africa is known for.

Bothongo Lion & Rhino Park (40 min drive)
If a full safari isn’t in your cards but you still want to get up close with Africa’s iconic wildlife, Bothongo Lion & Rhino Park is a fantastic option, especially for families or those short on time. We drove ourselves through the park and loved the flexibility (plus, it was toddler-nap-friendly!). With over 100 species of animals and predator feeding shows on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 1pm, this park offers a safe, easy, and unforgettable way to experience South Africa’s wildlife without going too far.
Travel Advisor Tip: You can book a private guided tour or even stay overnight for a more immersive experience!
Cradle of Humankind – Sterkfontein & Maropeng Caves (1 hr drive)
Just a few kilometers from the Lion & Rhino Park lies one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world: the Cradle of Humankind. Here, you’ll find the Sterkfontein and Maropeng Caves, where ancient fossils of our earliest ancestors were discovered. For families and curious kids, this is a unique chance to literally walk through history.
Travel Advisor Tip: Combine this with a morning safari at Bothongo for a full, educational day!
Elephant & Monkey Sanctuary, Hartbeespoort (1.5 hrs drive)
Our visit to this sanctuary was such a hit that we made it part of our road trip to Pilanesberg with Nana & the girls! Feeding elephants by hand in a safe, respectful environment was a dream come true. The sanctuary acts as a rehabilitation space for elephants in need. Just be prepared… when you step into the monkey enclosure, they will get friendly. One jumped straight from Nana (while holding baby Ellie!) to John’s shoulders. Hilarious? Yes. Peaceful? Not exactly.
Croc City Crocodile & Reptile Park (30 min drive)
This one is still on our list since our girls aren’t huge fans of creepy crawlies (yet), but Croc City is a reptile-lover’s dream. Located just a short drive from Johannesburg, it’s home to crocodiles, snakes, tarantulas, and more. Perfect for curious little minds or anyone fascinated by South Africa’s cold-blooded creatures.
🍻 Pretoria (1 hr drive)
We made the short trek to Pretoria for the Capital Craft Beer Festival, held each June in the National Botanical Gardens. Even with a one-week-old in a carrier, we had the best time! Pretoria offers colonial architecture, museums, and landmarks like the Union Buildings and Voortrekker Monument, but it’s also got a lively vibe and is worth a visit outside festival season too.
Travel Advisor Tip: Pretoria can easily be combined with Cullinan Diamond Mine tours for another half-day adventure.
Drakensberg Mountains & Tugela Gorge (3-4 hrs drive)
This one’s technically a longer day trip, but worth considering if you’re up for a scenic drive. On our last trip, I was in my third trimester or carrying a newborn, so hiking the Drakensberg Mountains wasn’t realistic, but it’s at the top of our bucket list when we return! Tugela Gorge, in particular, offers incredible landscapes and moderate hiking for adventurous families.
Pilanesberg National Park (2.5 hrs drive)
Pilanesberg is a great alternative to Kruger for those who want a shorter safari experience without compromising on wildlife. We visited twice: once for Lowina’s 3rd birthday and again for Nana’s first-ever safari. Both times, we stayed at Bakubung Bush Lodge, right inside the park. It’s incredibly family-friendly, with guided game drives, buffet meals, and even a playground.
Travel Advisor Tip: I can help you book day tours or overnight stays here based on your travel style and group size!
Kruger National Park (4-5 hrs drive or 1 hr flight)
You simply can’t come to South Africa without dreaming of Kruger. It’s iconic for a reason. While it’s not a traditional day trip, it’s still accessible as a one-stop flight from Joburg. Kruger is massive, home to the Big Five and so much more. From family-friendly lodges to rustic camps, there’s a safari for every type of traveler. We’ve been on some incredible game drives, but Kruger is still at the top of our list!
Sun City Resort (2.5 hrs drive)
Sun City is where safari meets resort luxury. Known for its pools, casinos, golf courses, and family-friendly amenities, it’s also the filming location of the movie Blended! We stayed at the Sun City Hotel & Casino and played a round of golf (with a warthog sighting mid-swing!), but it can easily be done as a long day trip too.
Travel Advisor Tip: Perfect for a family with kids of all ages. Think water parks, game drives, and spa time all in one place!
Panorama Route & Blyde River Canyon (Full Day Drive or Part of Kruger Trip)
If you're driving to Kruger, do not skip this scenic route. Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest green canyons in the world and features epic viewpoints like God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Even if you don't plan to hike, the views alone are worth the drive.
Planning Tips for Families & Adoption Travel
Our family came to South Africa originally for an international adoption and ended up falling deeper in love with the country. I know firsthand the logistics of traveling with little ones, navigating legal processes, and finding moments of peace and joy in between. Whether you're planning a safari, a homecoming trip, or a multi-generational adventure, I’d love to help you design something unforgettable.
Let me take the stress off your plate so you can focus on the adventure ahead.
