Cape Town is one of the most spectacular destinations we’ve explored as a family, truly a place where natural beauty, cultural diversity, and unforgettable adventures collide. From mountain peaks to historic landmarks, foodie hotspots to colorful neighborhoods, Cape Town is a dream for every type of traveler. Whether you're visiting with kids or flying solo, these 12 must-do experiences should be at the top of your itinerary!
Where to Stay in Cape Town
During all of our trips, we’ve based ourselves in Camps Bay, and we highly recommend it. This beachfront neighborhood is known for its palm-tree-lined promenade, world-class restaurants, and sweeping views of the Twelve Apostles mountain range.
We stayed in a family-friendly Airbnb with a plunge pool, and even though it was winter in South Africa, we had one warm day to soak up the sun with Table Mountain behind us and the ocean out front… pure magic!
Other great areas to consider include:
V&A Waterfront – close to shopping, dining, and family attractions
Sea Point – scenic with a lively local vibe
De Waterkant – chic and urban with great cafes
City Bowl – central and convenient
1. Ride the Table Mountain Cable Car
No trip to Cape Town is complete without reaching the top of Table Mountain. Take the aerial cableway (a fun adventure for kids!) or, if you're up for a challenge, hike to the summit via Platteklip Gorge or India Venster. Either way, the 360° views from the top are breathtaking.
2. Hike Lion’s Head
This iconic trail offers incredible panoramic views of Cape Town, the Atlantic Ocean, and Table Mountain. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and includes some scrambling with chains and ladders near the summit. Go at sunrise or sunset for the most magical light.
3. Relax in Camps Bay
Even if you’re staying elsewhere, plan to spend an afternoon in Camps Bay. Lounge on the white-sand beach, let the kids play, then grab dinner with a view at one of the trendy beachfront restaurants. It’s one of our favorite family-friendly spots in the city.
4. Try Cape Malay Cuisine
Cape Town’s Cape Malay food scene is rich in history and flavor. From aromatic curries to sweet-and-savory bobotie (my personal favorite), every bite tells a story. You can even take a cooking class to learn traditional recipes and the cultural roots behind them.
5. Explore the V&A Waterfront
This vibrant harbor district is perfect for a family day out. You’ll find shopping, restaurants, boat tours, and cultural exhibits. It’s also home to the Two Oceans Aquarium (Lowina's favorite aquarium to date)! And yes, it’s where she bravely got her ears pierced, so it’s forever etched into our hearts.
6. Visit the Two Oceans Aquarium
Located right at the V&A Waterfront, this aquarium features marine life from both the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. It’s a must-visit with young kids, offering up-close views of sharks, penguins, and colorful sea creatures.
7. Watch Paragliders at Signal Hill
Not quite ready to paraglide? Neither were we—but watching others take off from Signal Hill is almost as thrilling! Pack a picnic and take in the sweeping views as colorful gliders float above Cape Town. It’s a peaceful and exhilarating stop for the whole family.
8. Wander Bo-Kaap
Known for its bright, bold houses and cobbled streets, Bo-Kaap is a postcard-perfect neighborhood with deep cultural roots. Book a walking tour to dive into the history of this area, shaped by its Cape Malay residents and their lasting contributions to Cape Town.
9. Browse The Old Biscuit Mill
If you’re in town over the weekend, don’t miss the Neighbourgoods Market at The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock. It’s the perfect place to grab lunch, support local artisans, and feel the creative pulse of Cape Town. We love this blend of industrial grit and modern charm.
10. Tour Robben Island
A powerful and educational experience, Robben Island was home to the prison that held Nelson Mandela for 18 years. Today it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering guided tours, often led by former prisoners, that shed light on South Africa’s painful but important history.
11. Stroll Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens
At the base of Table Mountain, these gardens are a peaceful, lush retreat with paths winding through South Africa’s native flora. The Boomslang Canopy Walkway is a must-do for kids and adults alike. This is one of our favorite places to slow down and take in the scenery.
12. See Woodstock’s Street Art
Cape Town has a thriving art scene, and the street art in Woodstock is some of the best we’ve seen. Take a guided art tour or simply wander the area yourself to discover colorful murals that speak to the city's past and present.
Final Thoughts
Cape Town is one of those rare cities that truly has it all: adventure, beauty, history, and heart. Whether you’re hiking iconic mountains, tasting your way through local markets, or learning about South Africa’s journey toward freedom, this is a destination that will leave its mark on your soul.
