Winter Wonderland 10-Year Anniversary Trip: 14-DAY Germany, France & Switzerland HOLIDAY ITINERARY
Embark on a magical winter journey through Europe’s most festive destinations. From historic Christmas markets to snow-dusted alpine villages and world-famous landmarks, this itinerary is perfect for anyone dreaming of a holiday road trip filled with culture, adventure, and unforgettable scenery. Germany, France, and Switzerland truly shine during the holiday season, and this route highlights some of the very best each country has to offer.
As a travel advisor, I curated this trip to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary, and it turned into an unforgettable adventure we were able to share with loved ones. We explored Christmas markets and castles with my in-laws on their first visit to Germany and France, then met up with family friends in Switzerland to enjoy the stunning Alps & cities together. It was the perfect mix of festive charm, breathtaking landscapes, and meaningful memories.

Day 1: Arrival in Frankfurt, Germany
Start your adventure in Frankfurt, a city where modern skyscrapers meet centuries of history. Stroll through the Frankfurt Christmas Market, one of Germany’s oldest and largest, where twinkling lights, decorated stalls, and the scent of roasted nuts fill the air.
Be sure to try local specialties like Bethmännchen (traditional marzipan cookies), Bratwurst hot off the grill, and a steaming cup of Glühwein (mulled wine) to keep warm as you explore. Don’t miss the chance to ride the historic carousel or climb to the balcony of St. Nicholas Church to hear the daily carillon at dusk. For a change of pace, hop on a river sightseeing cruise along the Main River, where you’ll get a unique view of Frankfurt’s skyline blending modern skyscrapers with historic spires. It’s the perfect way to kick off your holiday adventure.

Take some time to wander through the cobblestone streets, soak up the romantic atmosphere, and enjoy views from the castle terrace before continuing your journey.
Once in Stuttgart, dive into one of Germany’s most magical holiday traditions at the Stuttgart Christmas Market. This market is famous for its beautifully decorated stalls with each vendor competing to create the most ornate and festive booth. Lace up your skates at the ice rink in Schlossplatz, listen to live choirs and brass ensembles at the Alte Schloss, and don’t miss the children’s fairy-tale land with rides and holiday displays. Continue on to the imposing Hohenzollern Castle, home to one of Germany’s most powerful dynasties, where you can tour lavish interiors and soak in panoramic views.
On the way to Baden-Baden, pause in Tübingen, a picturesque university town. Stroll through its Botanical Garden and wander the cobbled lanes of the Altstadt, lined with colorful half-timbered houses and lively cafés.
Arriving in Baden-Baden, known as Germany’s spa capital, first stop for the amazing views at the Hohenbaden Castle that sits high above the city. Once you enter the town, you’ll find the perfect balance of relaxation and holiday charm. Soak in the soothing thermal waters at Caracalla Spa, then spend your evening at the Baden-Baden Christmas Market, famous for its festive lights, artisanal crafts, and gourmet treats.
