The RV Mistake That Led Us to RV LIFE Pro
When we dreamed about full-time RV travel, we pictured a lot of things. National parks. Campfires. New towns. Slow mornings. The girls riding their bikes around campgrounds. School happening outside instead of inside four walls.
What we didn't picture? Nearly having a head-on collision with a semi truck on a mountain road while towing a 43-foot fifth wheel.
Our first day on the road taught us a LOT about RV life, but one of the biggest lessons was something we probably should have figured out before we ever pulled out of our driveway:
The route that Google Maps thinks is a great idea isn't necessarily the route that's a great idea when you're towing a 43-foot camper.

Our First Drive Was...Eventful
Our first official towing day started out pretty uneventfully. We were leaving Greensboro and heading toward Natural Bridge, Virginia — only about a three-hour drive.
Three hours. Easy, right?
Well...mostly…
The first couple of hours went surprisingly well. John was getting comfortable behind the wheel, the camper was behaving, and we were starting to think, “Okay, maybe we've got this.”
Then our GPS decided to get creative. Instead of keeping us on a major highway, it routed us onto a narrow, winding mountain road filled with switchbacks.
While that might be a perfectly reasonable road for a regular car, it was not exactly what you want when you're towing a 43-foot fifth wheel for the first time.
And then things got scary.
We were climbing uphill around a blind corner when a semi truck drifted partially into our lane. For a split second, we were convinced it had hit the camper. Somehow, by what felt like inches, it didn't.
A few minutes later, another semi came completely into our lane around another blind corner, but this time while we were heading downhill. John had to bring the entire rig to a complete stop to avoid a head-on collision. There 100% were some choice words. There were definitely some very fast heartbeats. And there was a whole lot of "Okay...we are NEVER taking this road again."
Thankfully, everyone, including the camper, was okay. But that drive definitely changed the way we think about route planning.
RV Routes Are Different From Car Routes
One of the things we're realizing very quickly about full-time RV travel is that getting from Point A to Point B isn't as simple as putting the destination into your phone.
When you're traveling in a car, you can generally trust your GPS to get you there. When you're towing a massive fifth wheel, you have a whole different set of considerations.
Things like:
Low-clearance bridges
Steep grades
Narrow roads
Tight turns
Weight restrictions
Length restrictions
Roads that simply aren't practical for a large RV
And here's the thing: Your GPS doesn't necessarily know you're 43 feet long. That realization led us to start looking specifically for an RV-focused trip-planning solution.

But we're learning to prepare differently. We're checking our routes before we leave. We're paying closer attention to road conditions. We're giving ourselves more time. And we're learning that the shortest route isn't always the best route.
Sometimes the extra 20 minutes is worth it. Sometimes the scenic route is worth it. And sometimes, the best route is simply the one that doesn't require your husband to slam on the brakes because a semi is coming straight at you around a blind corner.
We'll take that one every time.
A Little Less "Let's See What Happens"
One of the things I love most about this lifestyle is that we're learning to embrace the unexpected.
We don't have every stop planned. We don't know exactly where we'll be six months from now. We're figuring out our work schedules, our worldschooling routine, our campground preferences and even how much stuff we actually need to keep inside this camper. We're learning as we go.
But there are some things where a little preparation goes a long way.
Route planning is one of them.Because there's a difference between being spontaneous and being unprepared.
We're absolutely choosing adventure. We're just trying to make sure the adventure doesn't involve backing a 43-foot fifth wheel down a road we never should have been on in the first place.

Our first few weeks on the road have already been full of surprises from stressful mountain drives to campground adventures, spontaneous worldschooling lessons and our 24th national park.
And we're just getting started. The route ahead is still being written. There will be wrong turns. There will definitely be breakdowns. There will be incredible views, unexpected stops, campground friendships and probably a few more moments where we look at each other and say, "What exactly did we get ourselves into?"
But that's the beauty of it. We're trading certainty for curiosity, a permanent backyard for an ever-changing one and our old definition of home for something completely different.
Our home has wheels now. And we're taking it with us.
