Zion National Park is one of our favorite parks for hiking diversity, offering everything from easy strolls along the Riverside Walk to challenging climbs like Angels Landing. But if there’s one hike that truly stands out, it’s The Narrows… a unique adventure that takes you through the Virgin River itself. It’s unlike any other hike in the country, combining water, towering canyon walls, and a sense of adventure that stays with you long after you leave.

What Makes The Narrows So Special

Unlike a traditional trail, The Narrows is literally a hike in the river. The Virgin River cuts through a deep slot canyon, with walls that rise hundreds of feet above you. The experience is unforgettable: you’ll wade through flowing water, carefully navigate rocky riverbeds, and occasionally scramble over boulders as you make your way upstream.

Every bend in the canyon offers a new perspective, from narrow sections where the walls feel impossibly close to wide-open areas where the sunlight dances on the water. It’s an immersive hike that makes you feel completely surrounded by nature.

How to Prepare for The Narrows

Preparation is key for a safe and enjoyable hike. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Footwear: Sturdy water shoes or hiking sandals with good traction are essential. The riverbed is slippery and uneven, so proper footwear prevents slips and gives you confidence while wading.

  • Clothing: Quick-dry layers are a must. Even in summer, the water can be surprisingly cold, and you’ll want clothes that stay comfortable when wet.

  • Gear: Bring a trekking pole or walking stick for balance in the current, and consider a small waterproof backpack for essentials like snacks, water, and a dry camera or phone case. We packed our own poles but they are available to rent nearby as well.

  • Permits & Timing: Most hikers tackle The Narrows from the Bottom-Up trailhead, which requires no permit for a day hike. If you want to go Top-Down for the full 16-mile hike, a permit is required. Always check the current river flow conditions as flash floods can make the hike extremely dangerous.

  • Plan Your Time: Even the bottom-up hike can take several hours depending on how far you go. Start early to enjoy cooler temperatures, softer light for photos, and fewer crowds.

Additional Tips:

  • Bring snacks and water. You’ll burn more energy wading than on a normal trail.

  • Keep an eye on weather forecasts. The Narrows can close quickly during sudden storms.

  • Don’t rush… part of the magic is taking your time and enjoying the rhythm of the river and the canyon.

  • Don’t want to DIY it? Hire a private guide to help all along the way.

Why We Love The Narrows

The Narrows combines adventure, beauty, and challenge in one unforgettable experience. Unlike other hikes in Zion, you’re fully immersed in the landscape, surrounded by soaring canyon walls, the sound of rushing water, and the ever-changing play of light on stone and river.

It’s also a perfect example of why Zion is our favorite park for hiking diversity. From the quick, family-friendly Riverside Walk to the adrenaline-pumping Angels Landing and the immersive, wading adventure of The Narrows, there truly is a trail for every skill level and every type of explorer.

Tackling The Narrows is not just a hike, it’s an experience. Whether you go for a few miles from the bottom-up or plan a longer Top-Down adventure with a permit, it’s an opportunity to connect deeply with one of the most iconic landscapes in the American Southwest.
