If you're dreaming of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in the Middle East, there’s no better combination than visiting Petra, Jordan, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, and spending a night under the stars in a luxury Bedouin camp. From wandering the rose-red city of Petra to sipping tea by firelight in the desert of Wadi Musa or Wadi Rum, this unforgettable itinerary is perfect for travelers craving history, culture, and adventure in one epic experience.

We visited Petra and stayed at the Seven Wonders Luxury Camp during a two-week Middle East trip that started in Amman, included floating in the Dead Sea, and continued on to Egypt. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your own immersive journey through Jordan.

How to Get to Petra and Explore Jordan by Car

Jordan is surprisingly easy to explore independently, and we chose to rent a car in Amman to enjoy the freedom of a self-drive itinerary. Major tourist routes like those to Petra, Wadi Rum, and Aqaba are well-maintained, making a road trip through Jordan both safe and scenic.

Travel Tip: An international driver’s permit is recommended but not always required. Be sure to confirm with your rental agency in advance.

While most roads are paved and easy to drive, desert roads can be rugged, so a 4x4 is helpful if you plan to venture off-road. We experienced our own little adventure when we had to change a tire en route… just part of the memories!

Avoid driving at night, especially in rural or unlit areas, and double-check that your rental includes insurance coverage. GPS apps like Google Maps work well throughout the country, but don't rely solely on signage in remote locations.

Visiting Petra: Jordan’s Most Iconic Archaeological Site

No trip to Jordan is complete without a visit to Petra, the legendary “Lost City” carved into sandstone cliffs over 2,000 years ago. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the top attractions in the Middle East and absolutely lives up to the hype.

Highlights of Our Visit:

  • Walking through the Siq to the jaw-dropping Treasury, Petra’s most iconic structure.

  • Hiking to the Monastery for panoramic views of the surrounding desert.

  • Exploring ancient tombs, temples, and amphitheaters at your own pace.

  • Visiting both in the afternoon and again at sunrise for different lighting and fewer crowds.

Travel Tip: Arrive early for golden-hour photos and fewer tourists, and bring sturdy walking shoes for navigating uneven terrain.

We skipped the Petra by Night experience on this trip, but it’s a magical candle-lit tour of the Treasury offered a few nights a week and worth adding to your itinerary if possible.

Overnight at the Seven Wonders Luxury Bedouin Camp in Wadi Musa

After a full day exploring Petra, we checked into the Seven Wonders Luxury Camp, located just a short drive away in Wadi Musa. Staying in a Bedouin-style tent or cabin gives you a unique opportunity to experience traditional desert hospitality in comfort.

What to Expect:

  • Warm Bedouin tea by the fire upon arrival.

  • A traditional Bedouin dinner served under the stars, with grilled lamb, vegetables, rice, and sweet tea.

  • Evening entertainment with live music and storytelling.

  • A cozy, windproof cabin to shelter you from the desert breeze.

Stargazing in the Jordanian desert is unreal. Grab a blanket and enjoy the quiet magic of the night sky without any light pollution.

This overnight stay was one of the highlights of our entire trip. The balance between authentic cultural experience and modern amenities made it perfect for couples, families, and even solo travelers looking to connect with Jordan’s desert spirit.
