9 Best Things to Do in Chiang Mai, Thailand (+ Top 3 Day Trips!)
Planning a trip to Northern Thailand? Nestled in the lush mountains, Chiang Mai, often called the Rose of the North, is one of Thailand’s most culturally rich and naturally beautiful cities. Whether you’re into ancient temples, vibrant street markets, ethical elephant sanctuaries, or scenic hikes, Chiang Mai offers something for every traveler.
During our first visit to Thailand, Chiang Mai quickly became one of my favorite destinations, even with much of the city was closed due to New Year’s celebrations! With a peaceful pace like Krabi’s beaches and the cultural depth of Bangkok, Chiang Mai offers the best of both worlds.
Here’s your ultimate guide to the top things to do in Chiang Mai, plus three amazing day trip ideas to help you explore even more of Northern Thailand.
1. Explore Chiang Mai’s Ancient Temples in the Old City
Chiang Mai’s Old City is a treasure trove of historic Buddhist temples. Walking these quiet, spiritual grounds offers a deep connection to the city’s Lanna roots.
Don’t miss:
Wat Chedi Luang – A 14th-century temple once home to the Emerald Buddha.
Wat Phra Singh – Famous for its gold-trimmed architecture and revered Buddha statue.
Wat Chiang Man – The oldest temple in Chiang Mai, built in the 13th century.
Wat Phan Tao – My personal favorite! A beautiful teakwood temple especially magical with its colorful New Year decorations.
2. Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Located on a mountain overlooking the city, Doi Suthep is Chiang Mai’s most iconic temple. The gold stupa, panoramic views, and serene setting make it a must-visit. You can either drive up or hike the scenic Monk’s Trail for a more immersive experience.
3. Snap a Photo at Tha Phae Gate
This historic gate is a popular photo spot and the main entrance to Chiang Mai’s Old City. It’s also a lively gathering place during festivals like Loi Krathong or Songkran. We rang in New Year’s Eve here, complete with lanterns, fireworks, and unforgettable energy.
4. Shop the Sunday Walking Street Market
Every Sunday, Ratchadamnoen Road transforms into a lively pedestrian-only market filled with:
Handmade souvenirs
Local art
Thai street food
Live performances
Pro tip: Arrive early to beat the crowds and explore the entire stretch at your own pace!
5. Hike Through Doi Inthanon National Park
Home to Thailand’s highest peak, Doi Inthanon offers cool air, forested trails, and waterfalls galore. Highlights include:
Twin Royal Pagodas with sweeping views
Wachirathan Waterfall
Rare bird species (great for birdwatchers!)
A visit here gives you a full-day break from the heat of the city.
6. Experience the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar
Open nightly from 6–10:30 PM, the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is a shopper’s paradise. Wander through endless stalls selling:
Handicrafts
Art
Clothing
Street food favorites like mango sticky rice & pad thai
This is a great place to practice your bargaining skills and sample local eats.
7. Climb the Sticky Waterfalls (Bua Thong Falls)
Located about an hour from Chiang Mai, the Sticky Waterfalls are made of mineral-rich limestone that lets you walk straight up the cascading water without slipping!
Bring water shoes and a swimsuit for this unique natural experience. It’s one of the best free things to do near Chiang Mai.
8. Visit an Ethical Elephant Sanctuary
A visit to an elephant rescue center is a meaningful way to support ethical tourism in Thailand. Look for sanctuaries that:
Prohibit riding, bathing, or tricks
Allow elephants to roam in natural environments
Are accredited by reputable wildlife organizations
While not every sanctuary is perfect, many work to rehabilitate elephants rescued from neglect and abuse. These experiences are educational and inspiring, and a great day trip just outside Chiang Mai.
9. Take a Thai Cooking Class
If you love Thai food, you’ll love learning to cook it! Most classes start with a market visit, then walk you through preparing dishes like:
Pad Thai
Curry
Mango sticky rice
Spring rolls
Unfortunately, this was the one thing we missed due to holiday closures—but it’s at the top of our list for next time!
