If you’re searching for the ultimate romantic getaway in Tulum, Mexico, picture this: a luxury treehouse hidden in the jungle, crystal-clear cenotes, white-sand beaches, and candlelit dinners under the stars. That’s exactly what my partner John and I experienced during our 5-day Tulum couples trip with a surprise twist in the form of Hurricane Grace.
Whether you’re dreaming up your own romantic Tulum itinerary or looking for off-the-beaten-path things to do in Tulum, here’s exactly how we spent our unforgettable eco-luxury escape.
Where We Stayed: Hidden Treehouse Tulum EcoHotel
Our home base was the Hidden Treehouse Tulum EcoHotel, a sustainable jungle hideaway perfect for couples.
Think open-air living spaces, hammock-lined balconies, and a chorus of tropical birds as your morning alarm. It’s not just a stay, it’s an experience that immerses you in nature while still offering boutique comfort.
Day 1 – Arrival, Cenote Hopping & Hurricane Prep
Fly into Cancun International Airport and rent a car for the scenic 1.5-hour drive to Tulum. Driving gives you the freedom to explore cenotes and nearby attractions at your own pace.
First stop: Cenote Cristalino, one of the most beautiful cenotes between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Swim in the turquoise waters or hop next door to Cenote Azul or Cenote Jardin del Eden.
Check in to the Hidden Treehouse EcoHotel, watch the sun dip below the jungle canopy… then hunker down as Hurricane Grace arrives with 80 mph winds. Welcome to paradise, Tulum style.
Day 2 – Post-Hurricane Tulum & Local Eats
Morning stroll down Tulum Beach Road, helping locals with cleanup and soaking in the rare, tourist-free calm.
Lunch at Antojitos La Chiapaneca, an authentic, budget-friendly tacos that kept the whole neighborhood fed during the outage.
Evening dinner at Porfirio’s Tulum, one of the first restaurants to reopen post-hurricane, serving upscale Mexican cuisine.
Day 3 – Playa Paraíso & Cenote Aktun Ha
Breakfast at Fresco’s Tulum before heading to Playa Paraíso, one of the most famous beaches in Tulum with soft white sand and views of the Tulum Ruins.
On the way back, stop at Cenote Aktun Ha (aka “Car Wash” Cenote), a peaceful spot for swimming and snorkeling without the big crowds.
Dinner at Gitano Tulum, where jungle ambience, twinkling lights, and mezcal cocktails make for an unforgettable night. Reservations recommended.
Day 4 – Biking the Beach Road & Ziggy’s Beach Club
Rent bikes and cruise the Tulum Beach Road, stopping for photos at iconic roadside signs and boutique shops.
Breakfast at Los Bowls de Guadalupe for smoothie bowls and coffee.
Spend the day lounging at Ziggy’s Beach Club with margaritas, ocean views, and live music.
Dinner at Casa Jaguar, one of the most romantic jungle restaurants in Tulum. Reservations recommended.
Day 5 – Cenote Calavera & Departure
Before heading to the airport, stop at Cenote Calavera (“The Skull Cenote”), known for its cliff jumps, rope swings, and hammocks.
Drive back to Cancun, already planning your next trip.
Best Cenotes in Tulum for Couples
If you’re planning a romantic Tulum trip, here are our top picks for cenotes:
Cenote Cristalino – Great for first-time visitors.
Cenote Calavera – Fun, adventurous vibe.
Cenote Aktun Ha – Calm and less touristy.
Why Tulum is Perfect for Couples
Tulum blends eco-luxury and adventure like few places on Earth. You can spend the morning exploring Mayan ruins, the afternoon in a hidden cenote, and the evening dining in the jungle under a blanket of stars. Staying in an eco-friendly treehouse takes that connection to nature & to each other to the next level.
If you’re looking for a trip that will leave you feeling more alive, more connected, and more in love, a romantic couples getaway to Tulum should be at the top of your list. Whether you face sunshine or a hurricane, it’ll be a trip you’ll never forget.
