Looking for the best things to do in Istanbul? This vibrant city is the perfect introduction to Turkey and a destination that should be on every travel bucket list. Stretching across both Europe and Asia, Istanbul is a unique blend of history, culture, and modern energy that makes it one of the most captivating cities in the world.
We visited Istanbul in the middle of our 11-day Turkey itinerary and immediately fell in love with its stunning architecture, incredible food, and layered history. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, here are 12 unforgettable experiences you must include when visiting Istanbul.
1. Marvel at the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque
The Hagia Sophia is easily one of the top attractions in Istanbul and for good reason. Originally a Byzantine cathedral built in 537 AD, later converted into a mosque, and now functioning as both a mosque and museum, it perfectly reflects the city’s diverse cultural heritage.
Dress modestly, making sure to cover shoulders, knees, and women should bring a scarf for head covering, as it’s an active mosque.
Travel Tip: Stay at the Seven Hills Hotel, where you can enjoy breathtaking rooftop views of the Hagia Sophia while sipping your morning Turkish tea.
2. Explore Topkapi Palace
Step into the lavish world of the Ottoman sultans at Topkapi Palace, located just a short walk from the Hagia Sophia. Explore opulent courtyards, royal chambers, and the famous Harem. Don’t miss the palace’s treasury, which houses relics like the Topkapi Dagger and the Prophet Muhammad’s cloak.
Best for: History buffs, architecture lovers, and anyone fascinated by royal intrigue.
3. Visit the Blue Mosque
Directly across from the Hagia Sophia is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, better known as the Blue Mosque thanks to its stunning blue Iznik tiles. Its six towering minarets and massive courtyard make it one of the most photogenic places in Istanbul.
Pro Tip: Try visiting during prayer time to witness the spiritual energy while still being respectful of worshippers.
4. Relax in a Traditional Turkish Hammam
A visit to a Turkish bath (hammam) is a must for anyone visiting Istanbul. We recommend Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamam, conveniently located between the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.
Why go: Enjoy a mix of steam, scrubbing, and massage in a luxurious, centuries-old setting. It's the perfect way to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
5. Wander Through the Grand Bazaar
One of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, the Grand Bazaar is a maze of over 4,000 shops selling everything from Turkish rugs and lanterns to spices and jewelry.
Don’t Miss: Even if you don’t plan to buy, wandering the aisles is an experience in itself. We picked up a pair of beautiful Turkish lanterns that now flank our bed, our favorite souvenir from Turkey!
6. Cruise the Bosphorus Strait
A Bosphorus cruise offers one of the most scenic ways to experience Istanbul’s East-meets-West geography. Float between Europe and Asia while enjoying views of Ottoman palaces, ancient fortresses, and charming neighborhoods.
Add-On Option: Take a ferry to the Princes’ Islands or make a stop at Ortaköy Mosque (John’s favorite mosque!) right on the water.
7. Visit the Ortaköy Mosque
The Ortaköy Mosque is a gem of Ottoman Baroque architecture with a postcard-perfect location along the Bosphorus. It’s especially magical at sunset, with the Bosphorus Bridge in the background and glowing golden light over the water.
Local Snack: Grab a famous Ortaköy kumpir, a loaded baked potato stuffed with endless toppings!
8. Sample Authentic Turkish Cuisine
Food in Istanbul is reason enough to visit. Enjoy kebabs, Turkish delight, and of course, the legendary Turkish breakfast spread, featuring olives, cheeses, jams, tomatoes, cucumbers, and bread.
Our Favorite: The rooftop café at Seven Hills Hotel served one of the best breakfasts of our trip. For dessert, head to Hafiz Mustafa 1864 for some unforgettable baklava.
9. Discover the Spice Bazaar
Located near the Galata Bridge, the Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) is a fragrant and colorful market offering spices, teas, dried fruits, and Turkish sweets. It's smaller than the Grand Bazaar but equally atmospheric.
What to Buy: Local saffron, Turkish delight, or loose-leaf teas make great souvenirs or gifts.
10. Stroll Down Istiklal Avenue
One of the most vibrant streets in Istanbul, Istiklal Avenue runs from the Galata Tower to Taksim Square and is lined with shops, restaurants, and historic buildings. Don’t miss a ride on the famous red tram for a nostalgic throwback.
Explore Side Streets: Look for hidden vintage shops, rooftop bars, and hole-in-the-wall cafés.
11. Descend into the Basilica Cistern
Made widely famous in Dan Brown’s Inferno, the Basilica Cistern is a hauntingly beautiful underground structure built in the 6th century. Wander among its marble columns, mysterious lighting, and iconic Medusa heads for a uniquely eerie experience.
Cool Fact: It once held 80,000 cubic meters of water for the Great Palace of Constantinople.
12. Visit the Dolmabahçe Palace
End your Istanbul itinerary with a visit to Dolmabahçe Palace, one of the most opulent royal residences in the city. Blending Ottoman and European styles, the palace is famous for its massive crystal chandeliers, grand staircases, and ornate halls.
Bonus: The palace gardens and waterfront location offer a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
